Protecting and Styling of Your Curls

Once you have got your perm you want to make sure you take proper care of it. Please wait at least 72 hours before getting your hair wet. After the 72 hours is over you are free to shampoo and Condition your hair. Using the right hair products after your perm is very important as well. We can talk about all of that at your visit to make sure you are confident in taking proper care of your hair before you leave!

What is a perm?

A perm, short for permanent wave, is a chemical hair treatment that adds curls or waves to straight hair. The process involves using chemicals to break and then reform the hair’s natural protein structure. This allows the hair to take on a new shape that is set into curls or waves.

Typical Process

Here’s an overview of the typical steps involved in getting a perm:

1. Consultation: Before the perm process, there is usually a consultation with a stylist to discuss the desired curl or wave pattern, the size of the curls, and the overall look the person wants to achieve.
2. Hair Preparation: The hair is washed and towel-dried to remove any styling products or impurities.
3. Sectioning: The hair is sectioned into rods or rollers of varying sizes, depending on the desired outcome. Larger rollers create larger curls, while smaller rollers produce tighter curls.
4. Application of Perm Solution: A chemical solution, typically containing ammonium thioglycolate, is applied to each section of hair. This solution breaks the disulfide bonds in the hair, allowing it to take on the shape of the rods or rollers.
5. Processing Time: The hair is allowed to process and set in the curl pattern. The processing time can vary based on hair type, desired results, and the type of perm solution used.
6. Neutralization: After the desired processing time, a neutralizing solution is applied to stop the chemical process and reform the disulfide bonds in the new shape. This helps set the curls.
7. Rinsing and Styling: The hair is then rinsed thoroughly, and the rods or rollers are removed. The stylist may then style the hair as desired.

It’s important to note that while modern perms are less damaging than older formulations, the process involves the use of chemicals that can affect the hair’s structure. Proper care and maintenance are essential to keep the curls looking healthy. Perms typically last for several months, and as the hair grows, the new growth will be in its natural, straight state.
